Volunteering: Helping and Making Friends

The city of Mendoza and its outskirts suffers from a substantial amount of poverty and human need. Aside from the practical purposes of helping others, it is invaluable for young adults to be given the chance to cross a vast array of barriers - economic, social, cultural, and lingual - and develop the capacity to extend themselves to others. If the student approaches our volunteer projects with enthusiasm and kindness, these experiences usually turns out to be powerful and uplifting for everyone involved.

We are involved in a variety of ongoing volunteer projects. Our students are encouraged to choose projects in which their individual talents, interests, and passions are most utilized. This past year our students have worked with children and toddlers in a children's hospital; been kitchen assistants in a malnourishment prevention center; played with kids in an orphanage; renovated a school playground; and taught English to high school students.

Argentina, though considered the most sophisticated and educated country in South America, still remains very much a Third World country. After the economic crash of 2002, millions more Argentines became impoverished and now struggle to maintain basic food and shelter. Much more than the average tourist, students who volunteer are able to have a first hand understanding of the realities of poverty in Latin America.

"Argentina was the best thing that ever happened to my son. Thanks so much"
